Study Abroad

To help every Richmond student take advantage of international education opportunities, financial aid is available to students studying abroad. The types of aid available will depend on whether the study abroad program is a:

Financial aid for your study abroad program will be credited directly to your student account at Richmond 10 days before the first day of class at your study abroad program, assuming all applications and requirements are completed by the deadline date.

If the amount of financial aid exceeds your Richmond charges, then you may be eligible for a refund, which can be used for other educational expenses related to your study abroad program. Contact the Student Accounts office for information on how to obtain a refund.

UR Study Abroad During Fall or Spring Term

The same types of assistance for which you may be considered during enrollment at Richmond are also available to you for a UR study abroad program during the fall and/or spring terms.

Recipients of merit scholarships from Richmond may use their merit scholarships for a study abroad program. Athletic scholarships are not available for study abroad programs, unless authorized by the Director of Athletics. Financial assistance may be used for no more than two semesters abroad.

The application process varies by the type of aid for which you are applying:

Need-based Financial Aid and Educational Loans

The application process for need-based aid and for educational loans is the same for a study abroad program as it is for enrollment at Richmond. The deadline for need-based aid for the following academic year is May 15.

Applications may be submitted after this date for educational loans, but should be submitted at least eight weeks prior to the start of the study abroad program. The following applications are required:

UR Study Abroad During a Summer Term

Educational Loans

Applications should be submitted at least eight weeks prior to the start of the Study Abroad program. The following applications are required:

Holt Scholarships

Holt scholarships are available for summer study abroad, for a semester or for an academic year. These scholarships are merit-based and awarded for participation in UR's summer and academic semester/year programs in Argentina, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, Spain, China, and Italy. Non-UR Study Abroad Program

Richmond students who study abroad in approved non-UR study abroad programs sponsored by other domestic colleges or institutions may apply for consideration for Federal Direct Loans and Federal Grants.

Contact the Office of International Education for information on the policy and procedure for approval of non-UR programs.

Contact the Financial Aid Office for information on the financial aid application process for non-UR programs.

Students who enroll directly with an international school (i.e., who do not go through a domestic host school) are not eligible for financial aid.
