Study Abroad

To help Richmond students take advantage of International Education opportunities, financial aid is available to students studying abroad provided they meet application deadlines and eligibility criteria, including full-time enrollment while abroad.

Financial aid will be credited directly to your student account at Richmond 10 days before the first day of class at your abroad program, assuming all applications and requirements are completed by the deadline date.

If the amount of financial aid exceeds your Richmond charges, then you may be eligible for a refund, which can be used for other educational expenses related to your abroad program. Contact the Student Accounts Office for information on how to obtain a refund.

Program information is available for students in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) for Summer Study Abroad.

Federal Direct Loans

The application process for Federal Direct loans is the same for a study abroad program as it is for enrollment at Richmond. Applications should be submitted at least six weeks prior to the start of the study abroad program.

The 2025-2026 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Summer 2025 Federal Direct Loan Application (available March 2025) are required to apply for Summer 2025 loans.

Students who enroll directly with an international school (i.e., who do not go through a domestic host school) are not eligible for financial aid from University of Richmond resources.
